Hearing Aids Types

There are several types of hearing aids produced on the market, making it often confusing
for hard-of-hearing patients to choose the right fit.

Receiver-in-canal (RIC) Hearing Aids

Examples:

Slim RIC Hearing Aids by Signia

RIC Hearing Aids by GN ReSound

The receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aid style is the most popular style of hearing aid. It employs a miniature speaker nestled within the ear canal to transmit sound. This discreet plastic-encased speaker wire electronically transfers sound from the hearing aid to the speaker, known as the "receiver," allowing seamless sound flow into the ear canal. RIC hearing aids are tailored for individuals with mild to severe hearing loss, providing them with an effective solution. This type of hearing aid is considered the most comfortable fit as it leaves the ear canal open.

Behind-the-ear (BTE) Hearing Aids

Examples:

BTE Hearing Aids by Oticon

The behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid encompasses all essential components, including a battery compartment, microphone, and controls, within a plastic case positioned behind the ear. This case connects to either a disposable plastic ear tip or a custom earmold, transmitting sound through a clear tube, ensuring effective sound delivery and improved hearing for users. Designed to assist individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, It is the most “powerful” type of hearing aid. The frequent need to replace the tubing to avoid cracks in the plastic leading to feedback is their only drawback.

Completely-in-canal (CIC) Hearing Aids

Examples:

CIC Hearing Aids by Starkey

CIC hearing aids are also custom-made and fit entirely within the ear canal, though they are slightly larger and more visible compared to IIC models.Due to their placement in the ear canal, they may offer some cosmetic advantages over other types of hearing aids but also have a number of inconveniences. Because of their placement in the ear canal, they may cause discomfort to some of the users. Additionally, they have the smallest batteries, often making frequent battery replacement challengingThey are suitable for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss, similar to IIC hearing aids.

In-the-canal (ITC) Hearing Aids

Examples:

CIC Hearing Aids by Starkey

ITC hearing aids are custom-made to fit within the outer portion of the ear rather than deep inside the ear canal like IIC and CIC devices. They are larger than IIC and CIC models, making them more visible when worn. These hearing aids are suitable for individuals with mild to severe hearing loss, as their larger size allows for more powerful components and features. They are considered the easiest to maintain and to put in and out but are known for being likely to amplify wind noise due to the exposition of the microphone to the wind.
